ИЗ ПОВЕСТИ ВРЕМЕННЫХ ЛЕТ

\xabВ год 6562 (1054). Преставился великий князь русский Ярослав. Еще при жизни дал он наставление сыновьям своим, сказав им: \xabВот я покидаю мир этот, а вы, сыновья мои, имейте любовь между собой, потому что все вы братья, от одного отца и от одной матери. И если будете жить в любви между собой, Бог будет с вами и покорит вам врагов. И будете жить в мире. Если же будете в ненависти жить, в распрях и ссорах, то погибнете сами и погубите землю отцов своих и дедов, которые добыли ее трудом своим великим; но слушайтесь брат брата, живите мирно. Вот я поручаю престол мой в Киеве старшему сыну моему и брату вашему Изяславу; слушайтесь его, как слушались меня, пусть будет он вам вместо меня; а Святославу даю Чернигов, а Всеволоду Переяславль, а Вячеславу Смоленск\xbb. И так разделил между ними города, завещав им не переступать границы уделов других братьев и не изгонять их, и сказал Изяславу: \xabЕсли кто захочет обидеть своего брата, ты помогай тому, кого обижают\xbb. И так наставил сыновей своих жить в любви\xbb.

"In the year 6562 (1054). The Grand Duke of Russia Yaroslav has passed away. Even during his lifetime, he gave instruction to his sons, saying to them: “Here I am leaving this world, and you, my sons, have love among yourselves, because you are all brothers, from one father and from one mother. And if you live in love among yourselves, God will be with you and subdue your enemies. And you will live in peace. If you live in hatred, in strife and quarrels, then you yourself will perish and destroy the land of your fathers and grandfathers, who obtained it with their great labor; but obey brother brother, live in peace. So I entrust my throne in Kyiv to my eldest son and your brother Izyaslav; obey him as you obeyed me; let him be yours instead of me; and I give Svyatoslav Chernigov, and Vsevolod Pereyaslavl, and Vyacheslav Smolensk. And so he divided the cities between them, bequeathing them not to cross the boundaries of the destinies of other brothers and not to expel them, and he said to Izyaslav: “If anyone wants to offend his brother, you help the one who is offended.” And so he instructed his sons to live in love.
