Ecosystems are under tremendous pressure due to the expansion of human population and urbanization. This is clearly evidenced by the extinction of many important plants and animals and the presence of others on endangered or threatened lists. Many ecosystems have been so transformed by human activities that they have become new altered systems such as urban ecosystems.
