For a solo to be truly great, the musician must go so far beyond the written music that they are completely lost. Escaping from the song so much that they cannot get back without adventuring through the unknown areas of their talent. There needs to be considerable risk of utter failure in order for the solo to make an impact. When the eight bars are up it should either be an embarrassing soft exit, or something that causes the crowd to think, “holy shit, that was amazing.”
