Born a slave, Joe grew up working in the factories of various planets harvesting materials for a rich Ammarian merchant, Artoro Magetti, CEO of MMS (Magetti Mechanical Supply). Although a shrewd business man, Artoro Magetti was never much for a heavy handed approach to his slave ownership. Artoro was frequently accused by his friends of treating his slaves like employees, rather than property and would frequently fire his slave drivers if Artoro heard of abuse.

Artoro often toured his planets and facilities. On one of Magetti's trips he had brought with him several of his corporate executives to Sarasan XII to show off his most profitable planet.

As they toured the extractor head control room, Joe was shouting instructions over the noise of the extraction machinery. The other slaves reacting as if by instinct to Joe's orders as he expertly orchestrated the collection of reactive metals at a rate that would shame the whole of the Gallente Federation.
