Kai represents both the best and the worst of the Federation. Due to her heritage she has dealt with discrimination despite being a citizen of the Federation.

As a young student Kai was denied entrance to the Federal Academy on questionable grounds. Having crawled her way out of the lowest ends of the caste system Kai, sharp as a whip, instead enrolled in the CfAS where she earned many science degrees relevant to starship operation.

The words 'sharp as a whip' embody her personailty, her work and serve as an apt metaphor for the story of her life. An edge, constantly honed to perfection, slicing through the obstacles blocking the path to her ultimate goal. However, though she is kind at heart, it has left her cold untrusting of others.

Why she continues to stand so straight and assetive in the face of all adversity is more complex than what first meets the eye; but she always will, for it is a dull blade that is most dangerous to the wielder.
