"Bomb, bomb, bomb!" The sensor tech's voice jumped two octaves. Jammer nodded, and the helm set a course directly away from the coming detonation. The Drake heeled over on its side and accelerated.
"Sir, Captain Sar has assumed command of the fleet! The Admiral is dead, and Victory has been destroyed!" Commo's eyes were wide.
Suddenly the deck pitched to port and the lights went out. The gunner shouted "we've been hit!" at the same instant the helm screamed "collision! collision!" Red and yellow emergency indicators lit the dark bridge.
"Emergency warp! Course 180-45: relative sun, full elevation. Jump, jump, jump!" snapped Jammer.
The fleet speaker came to life, garbled with static, and then the words "...scatter, scatter, scatter!" broke through.
Jammer and his First Officer stared at each other. With those words, the First Imperial Guard ceased to exist.
Eight long days later, a battered Drake docked deep in Venal, nine regions away. One man disembarked, and vanished into the crowd.
