Jude Kopenhagen

I am shadow ruled by light.

I must go out to the stars again, to the empty spans of the sky,
And all I ask is a sturdy ship and a star to steer her by;
And the engine's kick and the sun's song and the shields a'shaking,
And the ruby ring on the plant's face, and new dawn breaking.

I must go out to the stars again, for the call of black waters wide
is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a cold, crisp day with the gas clouds flying,
And the engine spray and the blown exhaust, and the shields a'crying.

I must go down to the stars again, to the vagrant wanderers' life,
to the gull's way and the whale's way with a ship like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long-trick's over.

I deal in little death.
