Bio
Hiryū was a Japanese aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy, serving during World War II. Commissioned in 1939, she was a modified variant of the Sōryū-class design, built at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. Hiryū played a pivotal role in several major operations, including the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Indian Ocean raids. She was the last surviving Japanese carrier after the initial American air strikes at the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. Despite launching a successful counterattack that damaged the U.S. carrier USS Yorktown, Hiryū was subsequently struck by dive bombers from USS Enterprise and USS Hornet. She was scuttled on June 5, 1942, after being severely damaged and unable to be salvaged.
