Azariel Grantar is a prime example of how extreme devotion to faith and an insatiable thirst for power can lead someone down a dark path. Hailing from an ancient aristocratic lineage, he was raised under strict rules and doctrines of the Amarr religion. Instead of becoming another bureaucrat or military officer, he chose the path of service to the church.

Sarkhan leads the Order of Purgatorium, which adheres to a radical interpretation of Amarr religious doctrine. They believe that only through severe trials and purification can one achieve closeness to God. This order is notorious for its harsh methods of converting non-believers and heretics to the true faith, as well as their active participation in military campaigns against other races.

However, Sarkhan's ultimate goal is to establish total control over all aspects of life within the empire, from politics to culture. He sees this as the only way to save humanity from sinfulness and decadence, which he believes are spreading due to the influence of the Gallente and Minmatar.
