However, his family suffered a double-betrayal when former governor Ana Utulf urged defection to the Minmatar Republic during the Elder Invasion and Chamberlain Dochuta Karsoth ordered the Mandate's Tsula plantations destroyed for harboring the Starkmanir. Taking advantage of a cultural exchange program designed to foster trade, Darkar attended the Republic University where he received his degree and pilot training, though not without much prejudice and "hazing" from his classmates.
