Pantalone is a stock character classified as one of the vecchi (old men) in the Italian form of theatre, Commedia dell'arte.

A miserly, naieve and often libidinous Venetian merchant, Pantalone operates on the assumption that everything can be bought and sold, and this turns out to be true, with the exception of loyalty (and love).

He also loves money for its own sake and will therefore only part with it when there is no other option, generally resulting in hilarity, and a cheer from the audience "e Pantalone paga!" or, "and Pantalone has to pay!" .
