Bio

Name: Jason Kell
Preferred Name: "Kell" or "J"
Occupation: Planet Exspress Chief Engineer
Office / Home Base: CAS, Clellinon VI (Obray Constellation, Verge Vendor)
Commands:
NAV Basilisk II (Escort Destroyer)
NAV Osprey II (Missile Frigate)
NAV Red Dwarf (Mining Frigate)
NAV Motherlode (Industrial Hauler)
RIP: NAV Basilisk and NAV Osprey. I loved those ships, and the Drones blew them out from under me. Basilisk had taken me through some bad situations and always came out the other side. Weeks of work had gone into making Basilisk faster and more powerful. She had an effective top speed of over 450m/s, 3x150mm coilguns, 1x150mm carbide railgun, 1x125mm raigun, 1x75mm carbide railgun and 2x75mm gatling railguns. Her Hornet I drone was recalled to the ship but ironically survived the ship's destruction.
Good ships deserve better than to be destroyed by combat drones, or to be needlessly risked by her captain. If you take nothing else with you from reading this, take that.
Update: Basilisk and Osprey recommissioned.
What did I learn from getting all my ships blown up?
-Always respect your enemies, even if they're drones. Otherwise, you'll suddenly find that you've severely underestimated the enemy when they start striking at you from twice your effective range, doing twice as much damage as your most powerful weapon
-If you come under fire, don't assume 'it's just NPCs, I'll be fine'. Don't take time to finish your conversation.
-When you engage the enemy, don't let your previous experiences define what you expect to see. The element of surprise isn't sneaking up on your enemy - that's very difficult to achieve - it's relying on your enemy to see what he EXPECTS to see (in this case, a combat drone) when in reality it's something else. I didn't expect a combat drone to deal 150 damage from 25km away, and so I didn't react properly when it happened.
-When it becomes apparent that you need to retreat right now, don't take time to pick up your scout drone. That was the final mistake that got me killed.
-Don't then charge straight back into battle with your second ship. If you DO, when it becomes apparent that you cannot win this battle with this ship, don't stay and fight anyway. Don't wait for them to destroy your armour before ordering warp, when you know they can do 150 damage in a single shot.
