Five tips for rookies:

Get out of that NPC corporation! Join a player corporation and make some friends! This is an MMOG after all. Consider joining Eve University to learn the basics. Make some connections, and – when you're ready – find the right corporation for you

EVE is a sandbox! Go forth and start building your sandcastle, stomp on somebody else's, or join a group of others and learn from them! There are dozens of professions to try out.

Skill points pale in importance to pilot skill and experience! Don't worry about having low skill points. Fit out a PVP Frigate and start gaining experience! When you're ready, upgrade to a Cruiser. Nobody said PVP has to be expensive.

If you can't afford to lose it, don't use it! You will lose ships! Pilots of all skill levels lose ships. Don't panic! Ships are easy to replace!

Finally, hisec is not safe; it is merely safer! CONCORD does not protect anybody; CONCORD punishes offenders after the fact.
