My Uncle, John A. Mixon (1923-2001), fought in Europe with the U.S. Army, 87th Inf. Div, 311th Batt, C Co in the Battle of the Bulge.

The Mission of the 311th Infantry Regiment was to cross the Roer River and sieze the enemy held town of Dedenborn, Germany. An Impenetrable hail of enemy small arms, automatic weapons, mortar and artillery fire raked the approach of the river. Technicial Sargent Mixon was one of 36 men who successfully swam across the swift and icy river. Upon reaching the other shore, he, despite his cold, wet and exhuasted condition continued the assault with such fury and determination that greatly superior forces were driven from the town.
