Transversal Velocity
Never EVER "Approach" a ship, this includes being lazy and hitting your orbit distance before you're within tackle range. Fly at an angle towards any ship as if you were flying at it's double to an 80 degree offset. This will minimise it's damage to you or possibly evade all of it alltogether. When you are with optimal range you may then orbit (tackle)accordingly.
Deep Safe
In any system, fly to the furtherst orbital body, droping bookmarks while in warp. Then, when you reach your destination, warp to the other furthest orbital (anything) that is not where you started (and drop more bookmarks). Then, warp to one of your original bookmarks you droped in your first warp - then warp from it to one of the others you made on your second warp - inbetween those is your deep safe.
