In the decay of one nucleus 235U usually emitted from 1 to 8 (average – 2,416) free neutrons. Each neutron formed during the decay of the 235U nucleus, under the condition of interaction with another 235U nucleus, can cause a new act of decay, this phenomenon is called a chain reaction of nuclear fission.
Hypothetically, the number of neutrons of the second generation (after the second stage of nuclear decay) may exceed 32 = 9. With each subsequent step of the fission reaction, the number of neutrons produced can increase in an avalanche. In real-world conditions, free neutrons may not produce a new fission act by leaving the sample before capturing 235U, or by being captured by both the 235U isotope itself, turning it into 236U, and other materials (for example, 238U, or the resulting fission fragments, such as 149Sm or 135Xe).
If, on average, each act of fission produces another new act of fission, the reaction becomes self-sustaining; this state is called critical (see also neutron multiplication Factor).
In real conditions, it is not so easy to reach the critical state of uranium, because a number of factors affect the course of the reaction. For example, natural uranium is only 0.72% 235U, 99.2745% 238U[2], which absorbs neutrons produced by nuclear fission 235U. This leads to the fact that in natural uranium, the chain reaction of fission is now very quickly attenuated. Undamped fission chain reaction can be carried out in several main ways[5
