Dolosus not knows where the Mercator name originated from, only that it has been passed down for generations from one proud father to the next. He was told he was the last of his kin and that the legacy of the Mercator "business" rests on his shoulders. Although Dolosus was never one for legacy, he inevitably followed in his father's footsteps, given that this life was all he knew.

Although his methods of obtaining product are borderline legal, and sometimes far from it, that does not mean he lacks a sense of morality. He pulls out the cliche “survival card” to justify his actions, but he does dream of eventually reestablishing the Mercator name as it was in another galaxy from a different time when more legitimate ethics were practiced. To do so, the only choice Dolosus sees before him is to thrust his hands into the tar and strangle the demons within.
