Hypernova- A type of supernova explosion with an energy substantially higher than standard supernovae. An alternative term for most hypernovae is "superluminous supernovae". Such explosions are believed to be the origin of long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Hypernovae occur in stars with a mass greater than 30X that of our own sun. At the end of hypernova life it thus projects gamma rays and becomes the infamous "super massive black hole". Hypernovae are among the brightest and most destructive forces in the known galaxy.
