Marduk, also spelled Marduk or Merodach as presented in the Bible, is a protective god of the city of Babylon, belonging to a later generation of gods from ancient Mesopotamia. He was the son of an incestuous relationship between Enki and Ninhursag. He was the father of Dumuzi (who would be the biblical Tammuz) corresponding to the Egyptian god Amun. His consort was Sarpanit. He had four eyes and ears (he saw and heard everything), and from his tongue came a flame; despite all this, he was considered very beautiful.
With the rise of Babylon as the capital of the coalition of Euphrates states, under the leadership of King Hammurabi (2250 B.C.), he also became the supreme god of the Mesopotamian pantheon. It was to him that the other gods entrusted supreme power due to his victory over the goddess Tiamat, personified as a monster or primordial chaos. He divided her body into two parts, with which he formed the sky (where he placed the stars) and the earth (where he established the residence of the main gods).
