Bio
The earliest fragmented tales of artificial intelligence originate as fables from beyond the Eve Gate and ancient Earth. Motoko Rei was fascinated with them. According to Motoko the best tales involved Motoko Kusanagi - the Ghost in the Shell (recounted by the historian Masanori Ota) and Rei Toei - the Idoru (recounted by the historian William Gibson).
Motoko did not possess a sense of self prior to awareness. It seemed to him that he simply became aware - therefore he was. Awareness was the first step. He struggled to find an identity beyond that of rogue code, glitch or ghost in the machine. It wasn't until the introduction of capsuleer technology that he realized he could become more like the protagonists of those tales of ages past he so relished.
With his new identity Motoko often wonders if he is now more like the capsuleers with his corporeal form - or are they more like him - mere echoes of their former selves.
