Ash Melkan is plagued with an eye disease inherited by many descendants of Brutor Defiants and, although Ash has had easy access to cures for the disease, he decided against a cure as the white eyes have become a sign of respect amongst the Brutor clan.

Ash proved himself as an outstanding ship captain when he decided to take up the fight against the Amarians and his squadrons notoriety grew quickly while operating on the borders of Minmatar and Amarr space. Other rebel leaders, who were taking a "licking" from the Amarians as a result of Ash's combat excellence, forced Ash to leave his border regions with his squadron and setup his base of operations away from Minmatar space.

It is said that, being far from deterred, Ash continues fighting the Amarians from his isolated station hidden deep within enemy territory even to this day. Although that is just a rumor and has not been proven even with enemy spies always on the hunt for Ash and his squadron.
