Verena Nova was a security worker at a chemical plant in the Caldari State. After her manager made an unwelcomed sexual advance, Verena struck him in the face. Enraged by her defiance, he attacked her. Verena proved tougher than he thought, so he drew his sidearm. Verena shoved his arm away, making the shot go wide, but the stray bullet hit a high pressure steam pipe just inches away from her. The steam seared the side of her face. In fear of the man's firearm, and angered by the painful burn, she tackled the man and pushed him over safety railing and into an open chemical vat. His cries of agony were short-lived as flesh and muscle quickly melted away.

Fleeing the State that labeled her a criminal, she eventually found the capsuleer Sebastien Starstrider. The man listened to her story and offered her safety. When it was later discovered that Verena could become a capsuleer, he sponsored her journey into the stars.
