Under certain conditions it may be possible for gauge symmetry to be broken without disrupting gauge invariance and without any new massless particles or forces required (a.k.a. the Higgs Mechanism).
Below an extremly high energy level (126 GeV/c^2) the existence of a scalar field of non-zero vacuum potential spontaneously breaks electro-weak gauge symmetry, which triggers the acquisition of mass by those particles interacting with the field (e.g. the Higgs boson has mass absorbed from one of two nuetral componets of the field, but no charge, spin, or color).
Electro-weak symmetry breaking is thus belived to be responsible for particles such as massless fermions and the massive W and Z gauge bosons. It also offers an explanation for dark energy, that silly non-zero vacuum state energy driving the expansion of the known universe.
AND SO I SAY TO YOU, STRING THEORISTS: CREATING MASS OUT OF NOTHING IS ABSURD!
