The only family I've ever known is the State. No mom, no dad, just proctors, doctors and instructors. They spent damned near two decades kicking my ass into something they could unleash upon a hostile universe, and conditioned me to fear failing in that. Then somewhere along the line, they discovered I had a knack for flying. My first taste of freedom was literally returning to a tank full of the same crap they decanted me out of the first time. Nothing could match that first sense of power that came when my heart roared in sync with the engines of the Merlin. I stuck a tube up my nose and a mask on my face and never looked back.
I'm free of my obligations to the State now, but I keep in touch. I don't make a habit of burning my bridges. Still, I don't for a minute regret leaving the cradle of civilization for life beyond the empires.
