Being the first to quantize gravitation, it was straight forward to implement the newly found exotic matter with negative mass into a quantized black hole model. Until then it was widely believed, that the wormhole picture of a black hole is nothing but a relic from a differmorphism eliminating the coordinate singularity on the event horizon. However, by transfering the calculation to the quantum regime, it became clear that the diffeomorphism in general relativity, which is a symmetry transformation, was only possible to do in the quantum theory by introducing exotic matter into the Lagrangian. It was then possible to build the first wormhole gate.
