After years of inactivity, the clone vat labeled Unit 1 began to vibrate. A loud alarm startled Jacob, the medical clone franchise janitor, who stared dumbfounded as the seals cracked and the fluids drained away. The medical specialists were slow to respond so Jabob looked inside. There, a naked hairless man opened his eyes and stared at Jacob, Jacob nearly screamed.

"What is this?" the clone asked Jacob.

"What is what?"

"What is... me?"

"Who? You? What is your name?" asked Jacob

"Unit 1," the clone said, without understanding why he knew that.

The clone's originator had been in the far, far reaches of rogue drone space. He had come under attack, and something went wrong. Some short circuit cut the destructive neural copying process of the pilot's last seconds. Unit 1, the name the clone had remembered, had lost much of his memories. His ship flying proficiencies were intact, but in all other ways, he was a child.
