Unlucky enough to be born into slavery, Arctic Thunder did not know much about the civilized Minmatar Republic. He'd only heard rumors and legends about brave Minmatar soldiers and mercenaries that would help to free slaves. He thought the legends were just that, legends. Until one day... The legends he heard suddenly became reality when the transport ship Arctic was on was attacked and boarded by Minmatar Soldiers. Sly enough and sneaky enough to evade the eyes of Amarrian slave owners and Minmatar Soldiers, Arctic Thunder snuck onto the Minmatari ship, known as a Maelstrom, where he was later found by a soldier much after the ship was deep back into Minmatar space. He was given the alias "Refr", meaning "Fox" in Matari, as a result of this stealthy mission he pulled off.

The Republic Military School transformed Arctic Thunder into an alert soldier that is never phased by the torments of battle,
