The earliest extant records for Clan Treadstar suggest its origins on Athra (now Amarr Prime) as a Khanid family. Some 10 generations ago, the Treadstars left that system to settle what is now Ammatar space for reasons that are unclear, It has been suggested that the relocation was due to disagreements with the Khanid secession from the Amarr Empire, but other explanations suggest a more sinister motive: Amarr records note certain agents with the name "Treadstar" in infiltrator groups aimed at monitoring the Minmatar and keeping them disorganized. Whatever the real reasons for relocation, the Treadstars became intertwined with the Vherorkior tribes (with whom they shared a nomadic outlook on life). A few members of the clan served their respective empires in military/paramilitary capacities over the years, mostly as privateers and soldiers of fortune.

The Minmatar liberation caused a rift in the clan: while some branches remained loyal to Amarr, others turned to the Khanids, and still others turned to the Caldari for support. A large number of lineages expressed loyalty to the Minmatar cause, resulting in a breach that was exacerbated by continued Minmatar military skirmishes with Amarr forces following the founding of the Minmatar Republic. The branches who returned to the Khanid or sought refuge with the Caldari tended to have a more civil approach and level-headed attitude towards all of this conflict, but for those who were loyal to either the Amarrians or the Minmatar, this breach was not reconciled; even today, members of opposing lineages refuse to speak to each other except via harsh language and violence.
