Bio
There is no separation between Earth and space. When we think of Earth and planets we think of hospitality. This, we think to ourselves, is home.
But this is wrong. Fundamentally, there is no separation between the border of a planet and the border of space; there is only a decreasing pressure of atoms bumping into each other due to gravity. There are no true boundaries in physics; there are no true boundaries in the universe. We create boundaries, we call these "forms" because it was evolutionarily advantageous to see large patterns in the movement of atoms. But on the atomic level, there is no boundary; there is no car that is truly separate from the road, there is no person that is separate from the air; all subatomic particles are interacting with each other in a giant universal soup.
Therefore there is no separation between the earth and space, just as there is no true separation between self and other matter. So the Earth and other planets are not "our environment", "our home", it does not have a priviliged place among the stars. We cherish our Earth because it birthed and protected us. But we have faced challenges before; we have colonized incredibly hostile environments; extreme heat, extreme cold; extreme pressure. You have to treat space just as you'd treat the mountains, or the forests, or the dessert. It's a unique environment. And you have to recognize that the only reason you give special priviledge to temperate climates and fair weather is because these climate conditions were evolutionarily to our advantage.
But now? With asteroid mining on the horizon, exploration and colonization of other planets, a low gravity atmosphere that provides unique ways of manufacturing: space is a highly advantageous environment. We simply have to learn how to keep ourselves safe. Like wearing a warm jacket in a blizzard.
The Earth is not a special place in the universe. There are other planets like it. If we ever want to grow as a species and live in the stars, we have to let go of our view that the Earth is our one and only home if we wish to grow up.
Wouldn't it be something, to live among the stars?
