For the mortal members of a ships crew, the perception of time comes in two flavors: objective, typically termed GMT for Galactic Mean Time, and subjective. Thus, while the transit time of a intra-system warp might only appear a few moments to an objective observer external from the null-space conduit through which the ship is transported, a crew member typically experiences several hours of transit time. While such intra-system transits normally do not require being "put on ice," crews on deep-space transits between systems which require full jump translations often experience several weeks or even months of subjective time lapse particularly when multiple jump translations are demanded. It's in these instances that crews are frequently "chilled out" since the cryogenic chambers can be heavily shielded and thus help to minimize prolonged exposure to jump-space radiation.
