After growing up in the sheltered confines of Pator, Tar Kovsky got an education through the Pator Tech School. At his parents' insistence, he studied science -- a "safe" field. But Tar soon rebelled against safety and against his parents. "How can I seek safety while my brothers and sisters are still enslaved?" So, Tar resolved to become a pilot. Unfortunately, he was not quite as prepared to be a freedom fighter as he had hoped. Several early battles left him drifting through space in a pod. Watching his funds slowly dwindle, he realized that he would have to spend a long time training, before he would be of any use to the cause. And so he honed his skills and waited for the right opportunity.

That opportunity finally came.
