I consider myself to be a sovereign space holding entity, however, my sphere of influence rarely (if ever) extends beyond the (optimal+falloff)*2 of my ships turrets.
Diplomacy is like wanking, it gets the job done but it doesn't leave you with that satisfying feeling that you just boned someone's daughter.
