Under the assumptions of the normal regression model, the ordinary least squares (OLS) coefficient estimators are unbiased and consistent. Also, among possible estimators that are unbiased and that are defined as linear combinations of the observed Y values, the OLS estimators have the smallest variance. Technically, the OLS estimators are the "best linear unbiased estimators" for the regression coefficients. This result is known as the Gauss-Markov Theorem, and it contributes to the high regard in which OLS is held.
